The Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) provides programs and services to public school districts, nonpublic schools, and other human service organizations of Berks County, Pennsylvania. The BCIU also is a liaison agent between the schools and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The Berks County Intermediate Unit offers a wide range of diverse services, including alternative and special education, early intervention, child care, services to at-risk students and students with disabilities, as well as curriculum, instruction, and professional staff development. The BCIU also provides business and information management services, instructional media services, public relations services, pupil transportation, and many other varied services. The Berks Career and Technology Center (BCTC) was founded in 1968 and is regarded as one of the premier career and technical education facilities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, largely due to the outstanding performance and success of our students. BCTC operates two campuses. BCTC provides high-quality technical education and career preparation to meet the needs of today’s high school students and adults. The school serves 16 public school districts, numerous nonpublic schools, and the citizens and businesses of the Berks County area. BCTC operates as a school of choice, designed for students who are seeking to enhance their educational program with highly relevant career and technical experience that is connected directly to business and industry. The Brandywine Heights Area School District is located in the northeastern quadrant of Berks County, about ten miles from the City of Reading. The district borders Lehigh County and is within commuting distance of the Allentown/Bethlehem metropolitan area. The district encompasses approximately 52.2 square miles and is comprised of four municipalities: the Borough of Topton and the townships of District, Longswamp, and Rockland. Topton is perhaps best known for being the home of the Topton Lutheran Home, an assisted living and skilled nursing community for the elderly. The largest commercial industry in the Topton area is East Penn Manufacturing, associated with the manufacture and shipping of Deka automotive and marine batteries. The close proximity of two larger cities, Allentown and Bethlehem, provides opportunities for employment in any number of occupations that would not normally be available in a small community. Proposed new highways leading from the larger local metropolitan areas, passing in the near vicinity of the Borough of Topton, provide a ready access for both businesses and residents of the area.

The Exeter Township School District is located in Berks County, four miles southeast of Reading. It sits within the boundaries of two political entities, Exeter Township and the Borough of St. Lawrence. Exeter is a suburban community with a population of approximately 23,701. The average income of our community members is $67,000, which is about $13,000 above the county average. Eighty-two percent of our population are high school graduates, while another 32% have post high school degrees. The Exeter community has seen rapid growth in its population during the past 10 years. From 1990 to 2000, it was estimated that the population grew 15.9%, and there is an anticipated population growth of another 10.53% during the next ten years. The Exeter Township School District’s students score slightly above the state average on the SAT test in both math and verbal. We have a graduation rate of 98%, with approximately 75% of our students going on to higher education. Exeter Township School District is made up of six school buildings and an Administration Building.

For the last ten years, over 40% of Reading youth have not graduated high school. Where are they now? Likely unemployed, uninsured, unhealthy or incarcerated. These young adults are lost to the system, lack adequate work skills, and don’t know where to go to get their lives back on track. The I-LEAD Charter School is one second-chance option for some of these forgotten ones to re-engage in education and direct themselves toward a more positive future. I-LEAD CHARTER SCHOOL ACCOMPLISHES ITS MISSION IN THREE WAYS: We help our students build and practice a repertoire of important leadership skills—the skills entailed in effective dialogue, negotiation, creative leadership, systems thinking, speaking as a leader, and ethical leadership. We help our students master certain bodies of supplemental information required for effective leadership, including knowledge of public systems, private systems, political leadership, group dynamics, and understanding technology. The Tulpehocken Area School District is located in the northwestern corner of Berks County. It is approximately 45 miles east of Harrisburg, 20 miles north of Reading, and 45 miles west of Allentown. It includes the five municipalities of Penn Township, Tulpehocken Township, Jefferson Township, Bethel Township, and Bernville Borough. The district encompasses approximately 100 square miles. Students in the Tulpehocken Area School District are educated in three buildings. The Bethel Elementary School and the Penn Bernville Elementary School are located on opposite ends of the district and educate students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The Tulpehocken Area Middle School educates students in grades seven and eight, while the Tulpehocken Area High School educates students in grades nine through twelve. There are approximately 1300 students served by the Tulpehocken Area School District.
